Lactarius volemus var. flavus Smith & Hesler. Cap 5-9cm across, flatly convex, becoming depressed from the uplifted margin; ivory yellow to buff yellow, becoming brownish where bruised; dry, velvety. Gills adnate, narrow to medium broad; whitish to cream. Stem 50-100 x 8-16mm, solid; cream to maize yellow; dry and velvety. Flesh firm; whitish to ivory. Latex white, unchanging, sticky, staining all parts brown. Odor strong (unpleasant). Taste mild. Spores globose to broadly ellipsoid, 7-8.5 x 6-7.5µ; broad and narrow bands together form a partial or complete reticulum, prominences 0.2-0.5µ high. Deposit whitish. Habitat on soil in deciduous or mixed woods. Rare. Found in southeastern North America. Season July-September. Edible-good. (Never eat any mushroom until you are certain it is edible as many are poisonous and some are deadly poisonous.) |
